Design Goal:

These clients had 3 small children and wanted an open concept space. Their current kitchen was closed off from the family room and the eating area separated by a peninsula with cabinets overhead which made it hard for interacting with the children or entertaining. This Cape Cod home was charming but the white cabinets were worn, countertops dull and the floor was impossible to keep clean.

This remodel consisted of several structural changes; the exterior back wall was bumped out 4 feet with new windows and a sliding door for exiting into the backyard pool area. The back hallway was opened up and the pantry and closet were removed. A corner of the laundry room was clipped for kitchen space. These changes allowed for the new kitchen floorplan which housed a center island that could seat up to six, a big part of her wishlist. The perimeter was a unique shape providing storage and counterspace. The angled corner became a bar area with a mini refrigerator, a subzero refrigerator was covered by cabinetry. The Wolf range took center stage and was detailed by a mosaic harlequin pattern tile detail, accented with cream cabinetry in a Palomino finish on the hood. Cabinets were a warm Toffee finish with a black glaze and a traditional doorstyle. A golden granite in Santa Cecilia blends with the caramel tiles. Stainless and silver are added in knobs, appliances and Franke sink and Grohe faucet. Red window treatments provide a pop of accent color. The dining and family room door openings were widened and the full wall separating the kitchen from the family room was opened by creating a half wall with a cap. The old bar area was removed and a desk in the same cream Palomino finish took its place. This provided a great place to work and still be in the same room. The old brick fireplace was refaced with a beautiful ledge stone, a new hearth for extra seating and a custom wood mantle for display. The laundry room was customized with white storage cabinets, a “Laundry” glass door and friendly russet paint and floors. These changes allowed the cook to be center stage, monitor children and entertain in this new Gathering Space.
